Aggressive Behavior influenced by Social Identity and Prejudice Ashworth College Social Psychology Assignment 08

Aggression can be explained by the way it has been defined to mean “behavior performed with the intent of physically or psychologically hurting one or more other people” (Aronson et al, 2016). To argue that aggression is a trait people are born with is a logical argument yet social psychologists disagree.
From the viewpoint of a social psychologist, it is widely accepted that “we humans are born with the capacity for aggressive behavior, but how, whether, when and where we express it is learned and depends on our circumstances and culture” (Aronson et al, 2016).

All species react to threat or frustrations from outside sources yet human reaction seems to depend on different aspects of the situation such as the social situation in which the event is happening, the actual present environment, as well as our own cognitive processes that allow or halt our genetic tendencies to react because of things like testosterone production and gender.
Culture and society greatly impacts the aggression of the people. A culture of honor is a system that shows evidence of this impact. In a culture of honor the ego is held above all. In this environment a man or even a woman may feel that they have to be “tough” in order to protect their reputations.
This makes them feel worthy and important to the self. Evidence of this is stated in the text as “The culture of aggression explains that “when, “being a man” is defined by competitiveness and strength, men are constantly trying to “prove’ their masculinity and status as displays of aggression” (Aronson et al, 2016).
Beginning with the stories from the early fur trade, which caused competition creating aggression in the cultures. Stories from the first societies talk about the peaceful Iroquois who lived in harmony until they were forced to resort to aggressive behavior to protect their livelihood.
The textbook notes, “it would be hard to argue that they become ferocious warriors because of some innate aggressive impulse, rather, their aggressiveness almost certainly came about because a social change produced increases in competition” (Aronson et al, 2016).
On the upside, we know that society has the ability to change from an aggressive society to a more peaceful one. Our textbook teaches,“we now live in an era, Pinker argues, that is less violent, less cruel and more peaceful that any previous period of human history” (Aronson et al, 2016).
As humans evolve, not only individually but also together as a society. We have the capability to become more peaceful. Using our learned skills, we can inhibit impulses that cause aggression in ourselves and are triggers for others. We have also learned that through
