This journal is extremely interesting; as I learned a lot, not only about my upbringing, but was a true reflection of many of the blessings that I had.Parenting styles can impact a child in numerous ways. One of the major concepts that parenting style can impact, a concept that we talked about in depth, is a child’s self-esteem. It is always important to ensure that a parenting style is supporting healthy growth and development because interacting with a child and how they are disciplined can influence the child for the rest of their life. Growing up, my parents had very different parenting styles. My dad was an authoritarian parent and very much believed that my four siblings and I should not make much of the decisions and our feelings were rarely considered with him when it came to rules and how we were disciplined. He very much had a “because I said so” mindset. This was how my dad was raised himself. I did notice that as we aged, my dad loosened up a bit with stuff, but he will have his moments of lecturing when he needs to. My mom, on the other hand, was and still is an authoritative parent. My mom puts in a lot of effort to understand how we are feeling and maintaining a friendlier relationship with her children.

Upon reviewing the parenting style from the text, I identified my parents to have an authoritarian style of parenting, they were working-class first-generation immigrants from Mexico and fought hard every day to give me a life they never had. According to Shaffer and Kipp (2012), this combination of parenting style is common amongst Hispanic cultures. As I reflect on my childhood and how my parents chose to parent, I realize that their authoritarian style of parenting has affected how I choose to parent my son now that I am a mom. I do not want to be the way they were because I believe it affected my ability to socialize and I believe it made me more of an introvert than I would like to be. Being working-class did not have an affect on me, I am working-class myself and I have simply taken what they’ve taught me through their actions and push myself to be like them.
