Abstract

We are assessing the changes in heart rate under different circumstances. In the first activity we are measuring pulse normally with no restriction and with no breathing while the subject’s face is submerged in cold water.

Next, we measure the difference of apnea (holding your breath) in the air and in the water and the act of breathing in the air and under water with a snorkel.

The third condition we measured was facial immersion where the subject is seen doing different acts like breathing and holding their breath, but we are seeing if having their face submerged in water will cause a difference in pulse.

Lastly, we measure the effects of temperature on heart rate by having the subject hold a cold and warm gel pack to the forehead as well as hold their breath in cold and warm water.

Introduction

The dive response is a combination of bodily reflexes that ensue upon the submersion in water (diving) because they body is responding to the lack of external oxygen.

These reflexes include bradycardia (slow heart rate), apnea (holding the breath), and peripheral vasoconstriction (constriction of blood vessels) (Biology Texas A&M, 2020).

In this lab we are testing these reflexes, specifically heart rate, when put under a combination of scenarios. In the first activity, if a simulated dive is initiated, then the heart rate will decrease. However, the null hypothesis is that there is no relation between a
