Organizational AnalysisA2.Description and Characteristics of OrganizationThe cardiac specialty unit is a busy 32-bed medical-surgical unit in a rural Virginia hospital that services approximately 4,000 annually. Sentara Obici Hospital is part of the Sentarahealthcare system, which consists of 12 hospitals, 4 medical groups, and multiple other practices in the healthcare industry throughout Virginia and North Carolina (Sentara Healthcare, 2019). Within the Obici hospital in Suffolk, this unit specializes in patients with cardiac needs, such as congestive heart failure, angina, coronary artery disease, and patients recovering from procedures such as cardiac catheterizations, nuclear stress tests, stent placement, and patients requiring cardiac drips such as diltiazem, amiodarone, dobutamine, etc. This unit also receives various medical overflow patients as well and is therefore very busy.

The unit staff 4 unit coordinators,25 registered nurses (RNs), 4 licensed practical nurses (LPNs), 12 nursing care partners (NCPs), and 2 administrative assistants (AAs).
