Synthesis of Zeolite and the Efficiency of Sequestration Agents in the removal of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Sarah Finley* and Allie Lazear

Abstract

The purpose of this experiment was to gain an understanding of the ways zeolites may be applied and to compare the sequestration efficiencies of non-magnetic zeolite, magnetic zeolite, and charcoal in their ability to remove Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) using the model compound, Procion Red MX-5B.

Magnetic and non-magnetic zeolites were first synthesized, then utilized to determine the number of moles of dye removed per gram of sequestration agent, thus determining the most effective agent in removing PAHs.

The experiment demonstrates that the most effective sequestration agent of the three is

Introduction

Zeolites are minerals made from silicon (Si+4) and aluminium (Al+3) cations, which are tetrahedrally coordinated by four oxygen anions (O-2), making a three-dimensional structure withuniform voids and pores.

Zeolites offer an attractive and inexpensive option for the removal of both organic and inorganic contaminants (Murray).

The adsorption capacity of zeolites results from a high surface area and a net negative charge on their channel structure, which attracts and holds cations such as heavy metals (Candena).

Zeolites can be used to separatemoleculesand as traps for molecules so they can be analyzed (Vjunov). A major use of zeolite is as ion exchanger, due to its interchanging cation.

This allows it to be used for applications such as ion-exchange being utilized for water purification.
