Frequently, we are asked what exactly cognitive skills are. Cognitive skills are important skills that help children with attention, memory and thinking.

These skills are crucial in aiding children in processing sensory information and learning to evaluate, analyzing, remembering andmaking comparisons, also in understanding cause and effect (Gilles, 2019).

Most cognitive skills are learned, although some are inherited through genetic makeup, so with training and practice these skills can be perfected.

Helping a child to learn to pay attention helps them to learn to concentrate on a task or conversation for an extended period and will be useful in virtually every aspect of a child’s future.

Helping a child with their memory aides a child in retaining what has been learned and experienced; therefore, building their knowledge base for future use.

Helping a child to think better, helps the child to reason and to know if a goal is being accomplished or if help is needed. Let’s go over some activities we will do in our center to aide children in developing their cognitive skills.

Infant Room

We have learned that infants remember from moment to moment. “Otherwise, they wouldnot learn to search for objects, would not be able to distinguish their primary caregivers from strangers, and would not have consistent preferences for favorite foods and other stimuli” (Mossler, 2014, Ch. 8, Par. 2).
