Getting started this action plan will address the challenge of raising an aggressive child. It is normal for children to feel anger and aggression at times. When the aggression becomes excessive, many parents feel out of control and blame themselves. What is the best way to help children with these emotional outbursts? How do you know when unruly behavior is normal or is a symptom of a serious problem? Understanding the answers to these questions will give parents the insight to raise confident, calm, flourishing children.“Excessive childhood aggression includes not only getting into fights, but also belittling or being hostile to others, having difficulties in school, with their peers, and not getting along with family members” (Goleman, 1988, p. 1). It is important that parents and caregivers address this at a young age before it leads to troubles later in life, such as criminal activity and psychological disorders (Goleman, 1988)

1). It is important that parents and caregivers address this at a young age before it leads to troubles later in life, such as criminal activity and psychological disorders (Goleman, 1988). Studies have shown that lengthy, frequent, aggressive outbursts with or without self-trauma and the inability to calm oneself, may be associated with depression or a diagnosable disruptive disorder(Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, 2007). Children that inflict emotional and physical pain on themselves and others need help now before they grow up and continue to hurt others.

The first source, “Parent’s Assessment of Parent-child Interaction Interventions,” the researchers are interested in reaching parents that are experiencing problems because of aggressive behavior in their young children. The goal of this research is to “examine the effectiveness of interactive interventions on short-term and long-term changes in parental stress, attachment patterns, mental health, life satisfaction, social support, and the children’s problems” (Neander & Engström, 2009, p. 1). “The main result of this study is that the families experienced a manifest improvement during the period of intervention”(Neander & Engström, 2009, p. 28). This improvement continued and was still observed a year and a half later. The main psychological theory this study uses to explain why family-oriented intervention is necessary for treating behavior problems in small children is attachment theory, which “emphasizes the importance of the quality of early relationships” (Neander & Engström, 2009, p. 28). This theory uses the security of a parent to make the child feel comfortable enough to engage and explore the world. The credible sources provided will corroborate the claims and recommendations made later in the action plan. This source is credible as it is published by a well-respected journal, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Mental Health, and can be located in the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health.
