Throughout the current term at Southern New Hampshire University, I have designated my research for my final project to focus on the option of track 2- environmental influences with the topic emphasis on childhood experiences. I reviewed 5 articles to support this topic, three that were provided to me and 2 that I chose on my own. My personal focus is on anxiety and introverts in both children and adults. The following information is my findings from the articles and the research gap that I have found. The first article that I used for my literature review was Birth Order Effects on personality and Achievement within Families. The purpose of this article was to show evidence that there is a correlation between birth order, youngest and oldest, and if this will affect the personality of the child. It also looks into if the birth order affects the child’s achievements.

The purpose of this article was to show evidence that there is a correlation between birth order, youngest and oldest, and if this will affect the personality of the child. It also looks into if the birth order affects the child’s achievements. They used different variables in 4 different studies. The variables used were which sibling was achieving or rebellious and the Big-Five or Five-Factor Model; extraversion or socially confident, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience or rebellious, creative, and liberal. With these variables at hand they came up with a hypothesis that they, “expected [it]would confirm the following predictions:

FBs (first born) would be perceived as more conscientious and achieving, and LBs (last born) would be perceived as more agreeable, liberal, and rebellious” (Paulhus, et al, p 482, 1999). Their hypothesis and study have some historical significance as this wasn’t the first-time birth order and traits were researched. “Sulloway’s thesis was the birth order effects derive from a competition among siblings as they fight for a family niche” (Paulhus, et al, p 482, 1999). The article tends to agree with the historical aspect of the research. They believe that there is evidence through the research design of surveys with questionnaires.
