Relapse prevention of substance abuse is important, that is why it is also important to have good aftercare programs available for individuals. According to Melemis, S. M., (2015), relapse is a gradual process with distinct stages and recovery is a process of personal growth with development milestones. Complete recovery of a substance abuser will only be as successful as the programs that are available for this process, along with the support that is needed from the individual’s friends, family members, and mental health professionals. The desire and willingness for the substance abuser is one of the most important factors in their road to recovery. This paper will discuss why relapse prevention plans are an important process for substance abuse treatment, what goes into a relapse plan, suggested El Paso, TX relapse prevention programs, and limitations to relapse planning. Relapse prevention plans are an important process for substance abuse treatment because according to Melemis, S. M., (2015), individuals do not achieve recovery by just not using, it involves creating a new life in which it is easier to not use. Users do not just change their lives after treatment because all the factors that contributed to the addiction will still be thereafter treatment (Melemis, 2015).

Relapse prevention plans are an important process for substance abuse treatment because according to Melemis, S. Users do not just change their lives after treatment because all the factors that contributed to the addiction will still be thereafter treatment (Melemis, 2015). Relapse prevention programs are in place to allow the individual to feel confident in knowing there is help available in case the cravings to use begin to happen. Relapse prevention plans are an essential part of substance abuse treatment. According to Marlatt and Witkiewitz (2005, as cited in Menon & Kandasamy, 2018), relapse prevention (RP)is defined as “a strategy for reducing the likelihood and severity of relapse following the cessation or reduction of problematic behaviors” (para. 1).

Substance abusers are highly likely to elapse, with a relapse percentage of over 75% of substance users after treatment (Miller &Hester, 1980, as cited in Menon & Kandasamy, 2018). Relapsing comes with many symptoms that affect substance users emotionally, mentally, and physically. Some of the symptoms of relapse include overwhelming emotions, interpersonal relationship problems, isolation, poor self-care, post-acute withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, agitation, and nausea (The Importance of Relapse Prevention in Addiction Recovery, 2020). Relapse prevention plans are put in place to  lower the likelihood of relapsing and reduce the relapse symptoms.
