Abstract This paper will summarize the key points that distinguish the Montessori Method such as how the techniques and approaches to education in the Montessori Method relate to theories of learning (i.e. social learning, behaviorism); What, if anything, distinguishes Montessori from Piaget or Vygot sky and in what ways the Montessori Method may be like those approaches; and why, despite its popularity, Montessori Method less recognized by researchers in cognitive learning fields. Additionally, this paper will critique the statement that the Montessori Method maybe the most sensitive to diversity. The method in which children think and learn has been argued by many theorists.

Constructionists Piaget and Vygot sky are the most dominant and well-known theorists on the subject. Piaget’s theory of cognitive development explains how logical thinking changes within children. As a result of this theory, it is proposed that children go through four stages of development due to experiences and maturity. Those stages are Sensor motor, Nonoperational,Concrete-operational, and Formal-operational. Vygot sky’s theory is the opposite in that it focuses on how social interaction and culture lead to the development of children. Vygot  sky’s theory utilized three major themes, Social interaction, More knowledgeable other (MKO), and Zone of proximal development.Piaget’s theory centers on the manner in which children develop from biological maturation and their environment interaction. Piaget believed that children lack certain cognitive abilities various stages. Vygot sky’s theory suggests that children develop through sociology-cultural contexts.
