In neuroscience, I believe it is nurture that is the most significant piece of the puzzle. If a person is genetically more prone to addiction but grows up in a home where addiction is frowned upon and not made normal, it is less likely they will become an addict.EvolutionaryHow the natural selection of traits has promoted the survival of genes we are born with instincts that promote our survival and the propagation of our species (Honeycutt, 2019) According to Myers & Dewall, Nature versus nurture has long been debated in psychology during Hippocrates’ time because they are both inseparable. I would consider it an interesting conversation regarding this topic because everyone’s biological genes and the environment both play roles in shaping one’s personality. In my observation and readings from Soomo’s learning, I see Nature playing a more prominent part in influencing Nature than nurture and having more of an impact on human behavior. Personality (character) refers to genetic predisposition, while nurture refers to how our environment affects everyone. Because Nature decides which biological genes get passed down to individuals, people then inherit features depending on what genes they have inherited (Myers & Dewall, 2020). Researching and seeping from a different angle about nurturing, our “environment can mutate our biological genes causing mental and physical changes to our mind and body” (Lipton, 2001).
