Acculturation is the assimilation to a different culture. Children can impact their acculturation directly and indirectly by varying methods. According to the article, one-way children can directly impact their acculturation is by choosing a certain social group while in school. At home, the child will grow up with a certain culture and rules. When they go to school they learn about different cultures through their peers.

Children play an active role in development through constructing new cultures to direct social evaluation and other peer activities (Chen, 2012). A child’s curiosity is a direct way to impact their own acculturation. Children are naturally curious, and they love to examine and investigate everything. I know many mothers who can attest to this statement as many of us have spent a lot of time “childproofing” our homes thanks to our oh-so-curious toddlers. But, when speaking of acculturation and how this impacts, let’s say, immigrant children from Mexico, we can see how curiosity plays a huge part in their development. For example, an immigrant child recently placed in primary school with American children will be curious about his/her clothing choices, interests, cartoon shows, foods, games, values, language, etc. The child will begin socializing with his/her peers based on something they are generally curious about.
