PSY510 PSY 510 Module 1 – Freud.docx – Snhu

Read the materials for this week, including the article on pseudoscience
and the overview of Freud’s theories. In your opinion, are Freud’s
theories scientific? Why or why not? What makes a psychological theory
scientific? When responding to your classmates, discuss the points they
raised to support their opinion. How could the scientific method be
applied to these theories?
In my opinion, Freud’s theories are not scientific. While he seems to want
to take a scientific approach to his theories, he doesn’t follow through.
He creates hypotheses and applies these to different scenarios to suss
out if they make sense. But the problem comes that he never tests
these in a way where you could analyze them and put the information
out to be fact-checked. “Science is a set of methods aimed at testing
hypotheses and building theories” (Shermer, 2011), while Freud had
many ideas of what his work was showing him the testing aspect was
not there.

A psychological theory is scientific when it follows the scientific method
with an empirical technique to test the hypothesis that has been created.
By using a method that is logical and based on observation. (Rosnow &
Rosenthal) When done correctly this means that this research that has
been committed regarding the theory can also be tested by others to see
if the same results are acquired.
