To address the problem of prescription drug use among rural teens, the overall goal of this Action Plan will be to encourage peers, parents, and schools to be more involved in identifying risk factors and providing interventions for rural teens who abuse prescription drugs. We need to strive to make drug-free the new norm. The first recommendation is to try and foster a neighborhood norm of rural teens being free of prescription drug abuse. With such a norm in place, prescription drug abusers will see their peers living life successfully and happy and will be likely to conform to the norm and receive help for their behavior and addiction.“Non-medical use of prescription drugs is the second most prevalent substance used, risk factors include having friends who engaged in it, and protective factors included parental disapproval, greater school commitment, and community norms” (Collins, Abadi, Johnson, Shambien.

For many years psychologists have debated whether nature or nurture is more importantin human development. Simply put, are we who we are because of our genetics or ourenvironments? Although I believe both aspects play a role, I believenature has more impact onhuman behavior. Both nature and nurture impact human behavior, in fact, scientific research has shown“that genes shape psychological development and environment shapes genes” (“Nature andNurture,” 2020). Because of this, a new stance called, interactionist, has developed whichbasically says that nature and nurture work together to shape a person. I believe nature plays abigger role because “we are born with instincts that promote our survival” (Honeycutt, 2019).Our environments may affect our attitudes or the way we deal with situations, but our geneticpredispositions help to shape those choices and attitudes.
