The purpose of the article is to provide a narrative review of the evidence found that supports the efficacy and effectiveness of psychological treatments, across the life span, for common mental health disorders. The hypothesis of the study is that psychological and cognitive-behavioral therapies and treatment and intervention can be very effective in the treatment of depression, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, specific phobia, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder. The variables and factors being considered are psychological disorders and how to treat these disorders in a cognitive and psychological approach. The variables involved have been studied before and the article indicates that the results of the study have been indicated repeatedly; the results indicate that there is considerable evidence indicating that psychological interventions can lead to substantial improvements in functioning for those suffering from mood, anxiety, and related disorders. (Hunsley, Elliot, & Therrien,2014).

The research design used was a Literature Review. Over the past 30 years, many meta-analyses of the psychotherapy literature have been published. Since 2000, it has been reported that more than 260 meta-analyses examining the treatment efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapies for a range of adult disorders have been published. (Hunsley, et al., 2014). The research in this article was conducted in an ethical manner. The researchers showed competence in their ability to conduct the research. The research subjects were consenting adults, The purpose of the article is to determine and explain the correlation between life events (both positive and negative) and mood episode relapses, prevalence, and recoveries. For the hypothesis, the author’s question does events that occur in the lives of those diagnosed with bipolar disorder (BD) impact the strength and/or prevalence in the occurrences of mood episodes.

They are claiming that negative or stressful life events cause depression and manic episodes; as well as relapses and can be affecting the ability to function (Koenders, Giltay, Spijker, Hoencamp, Spinhoven, & Elzinga, 2014). Factors that were investigated were not only BD I and II, but also subtypes such as BDnon-otherwise specified and cyclothymia. Life events were important factors in the study. They were categorized positive (promotions, engagement, marriage), negative (demotions, illnesses, failures, unemployment), and neutral (changing work field or hours, moving); the neutral events weren’t included in the analyses (Koenders, Giltay, Spijker, Hoencamp, Spinhoven, & Elzinga,2014). The severity of the illness and symptoms of the participants was taken into consideration as well. When it comes to previous studies the results of them seemed to fall more into an area of overall inconsistent findings. The studies were hindered by the fact that they had rather small sample sizes and too many factors.
