Depression affects genders differently. Typically, depression is characterized by various symptoms, which include lack of motivation, low moods, lack of interest in activities, sleep disturbances, feeling guilty, change of appetite, and lack of concentration. In most cases, people with depression experience a few of these symptoms. Research shows that no two individuals with depression will experience similar symptoms. However, understanding how the symptoms affect people differently may lead to more efficient treatment for depression(Ussher, n.d., p. 42). Notably, depression influences people differently based on sex and gender identity.

Over the years, it has been thought that men and women express depression through different means multiple role relationships are where an unintentional overlap takes place. These are often seen as unavoidable. Say for example you live in a very small community and you’re the only clinical psychologist in the area, you may end up seeing a patient who also was someone you had gone to school with years ago. Another example of multiple-role relationships could be that a friend wants their child to be seen by you. So you allow this to happen, however, if anything were to come back negatively about their child, this then begins privacy issues and can continue to roll downhill.

Multiple role relationships are potentially problematic in the event that you may be seen as someone who has a biased opinion. “The APA ethics code admonishes psychologists to refrain from entering multiple relationships if the psychologists’ objectivity, competence, or effectiveness in performing their professional functions could become impaired or if a risk of exploitation might result in (APA 02: 3.05) (Koocher, & Keith-Spiegel 2007, pg. 264).”
