The decision to treat a child with ADHD should not be taken lightly. As a parent of a child with ADHD, I performed research to determine which treatment had the least amount of side effects in relation to the benefits. Prior to her diagnosis, my daughter was easily distracted, always out of her seat, could be found horseplaying and off task, and would need constant re-direction in class. All of these symptoms decrease the learning experience for my child and all the students in her class. It also made it difficult for her teachers to complete lessons due to the constant disruptions, which I imagine, can be very frustrating. My daughter exhibited little to none of these symptoms at home. Sometimes she would require re-direction when asked to complete chores but so did her siblings, so I didn’t consider it outside of the norm. In school, however, it was evident that she exhibited the symptoms of inattention and impulsivity. In the end, I opted to treat my child with a combination of medication and cognitive-behavioral therapy. National Institute of Mental Health (2020) indicates that exposure to drugs, alcohol, toxins, or stimulants during pregnancy, genetics, a low birth weight, and brain injuries are factors
