While working in an academic setting as an educator, you come across different students, each with their own unique story. Some students will learn differently than others. As an educator, you want to be equipped to teach every one of the students in your classroom properly. Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is “one of the most common childhood neurodevelopmental disorders. It is usually first diagnosed in childhood and often lasts into adulthood. Children with ADHD may have trouble paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors (may act without thinking about what the result will be), or be overly active” (CDC, September 2021). Many educators are not equipped to handle a student with ADHD because they lack the necessary resources to help their students better.Problem/NeedADHD can affect any child. “A meta-analysis of 175 research studies worldwide on ADHD prevalence in children aged 18 and under found an overall pooled estimate of 7.2%. The Census Bureau estimates that 1,795,734,009 people were aged 5-19 worldwide in 2013. Thus,7.2% of this total population is 129 million—a rough estimate of the number of children worldwide who have ADHD. Based on DSM-IV screening of 11,422 adults for ADHD in 10 countries in the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East, the estimates of worldwide adult ADHD prevalence averaged 3.4%” (Chadd, 2022).
