According to the American Psychiatric Association (2002), autism is a complex neurological disorder that impedes or prevents effective verbal communication, effective social interaction, and appropriate behavior. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that the number of children diagnosed with ASD is 1 in 110 (CDC, 2010). The decisions families make about autism diagnosis and treatment are directly influenced by the family’s cultural background. Culture can be defined as “the values, beliefs, language, rituals, traditions, and other behaviors that are passed from one generation to another within any social group” (Helms & Cook, 1999). The origin of autism is unknown; though this is true, many cultural groups have their own knowledge about the cause of such a disorder. Herbet and Koulouglioti (2010) reviewed literature about parental beliefs about the etiology of autism. Parents often believe that genetics, environmental factors, and events that relate to childbirth contribute to the disorder. There are many reports from parents that believe that vaccinations are responsible for their development.

For our first journal submission, we are asked to choose a childhood disorder and assess the cultural implications of the severity and/or treatment options for this specific disorder. We are asked to focus our response on how culture influences child and adolescent development. Several childhood disorders can affect a child or adolescent. For this journal, I will focus on conduct disorder. According to the CDC, “Conduct Disorder (CD) is diagnosed when children show an ongoing pattern of aggression toward others, and serious violations of rules and social norms at home, in school, and with peers. These rule violations may involve breaking the law and result in arrest. Children with CD are more likely to get injured and may have difficulties getting along with peers. Examples of CD behaviors includeBreaking serious rules, such as running away, staying out at night when told not to, or skipping schoolBeing aggressive in a way that causes harm, such as bullying, fighting, or being cruel to animalsLying, stealing, or damaging other people’s property on purpose” (CDC, 2021). It is estimated that about 4 percent of the population suffers from this disorder. “The condition becomes more prevalent in adolescence and tends to affect boys more often than girls”(Psychology Today, 2021).
