Since I was eleven years old, I have religiously checked my weekly horoscope, hoping for any insight or useful information that could improve my young life. As I got older, especially in my late teens and early twenties, my interest in horoscopes and astrology only increased. As ridiculous as it sounds, I recall refusing to date people based on their zodiac sign, stuck on the idea that their specific sign revealed not only accurate personality traits but advised me on who I should avoid. It was during one really painful and tough breakup, that my faith in astrology went up a notch, and I sought advice and guidance from a professional astrologer.

I do not recall how much I spent on the reading, but I do remember walking away feeling instant relief and hopefulness that I had been missing for months. At a time when I felt like my life was falling apart, astrology provided me a reassurance that I could endure and eventually surpass my difficulties. This same desire for solace and encouragement during challenging times is what continues to attract so many to astrology, and why its’ popularity seems unwavering. In fact, most millennials today have more faith in astrology than in any organized religion (Vyse, 2018).

It seems as though this current captivation with astrology, has more to do with psychology, than anything else. Part of the appeal behind astrological practice lies in the individual chart reading, which is an experience very similar to that of the therapy session. Yet, unlike therapy where patient endures months and even years of uncovering deep issues, astrology delivers answers far more quickly and cheaper. Although the scientific community continues to affirm astrology as a pseudoscience, its’ appeal remains strong. Even when presented with inaccurate or negative astrological readings, the faith of followers remains intact.
